Designers,Home Brands, and Businesses Taking Action to Support the Black Lives Matter Movement

Supporting Black Lives Matter goes far beyond posting on social media—here's how the design world is contributing to the movement.

With protests around the world decrying police brutality against the Black community—and systemic issues of racism at large—both individuals and organizations across industries have been declaring their support of the Black Lives Matter movement. While social media posts are a great way for those with a following to use their platform to raise awareness about BLM, we also want to recognize the tangible acts through which designers and design brands alike are contributing.

If you’re looking to further your own education about BLM, especially regarding the design world, we suggest using the Black Artists + Designers Guild and the Black Interior Designers Network as resources to learn how you can become a better ally through anti-racist actions, including hiring Black interior designers and architects for your future projects and shopping for home goods from Black-owned businesses. The Jungalow

The Jungalow donated all net profits from sales on May 30 to Black Lives Matter—the brand raised over $12,000. Founder Justina Blakeney also sold nine of her own paintings, with 100 percent of the proceeds being donated to Black Visions Collective.

The Future Perfect

The Future Perfect CEO David Alhadeff announced that the design studio has made donations to both the Bail Project and Black Lives Matter.

Magnolia

Chip and Joanna Gaines’s Magnolia empire has donated $100,000 to the Waco NAACP and the Waco Community Race Relations Coalition, plus $100,000 to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and Race Forward. Magnolia will also match up to $100,000 in donations to the latter two organizations. Magnolia is also implementing diversity and inclusion training for its staff.

URBN

URBN, the parent company for Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters, is donating $100,000 to the United Negro College Fund and matching employee donations 3:1 to the same fund, as well any donations to the Innocence Project, the Antiracist Research and Policy Center (ARPC), the Equal Justice Initiative, and Year Up.

Otherland

Candle company Otherland is donating 20 percent of its proceeds to the NAACP.

Lulu and Georgia

Furnishings brand Lulu and Georgia is continually donating to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Campaign Zero, the Loveland Foundation, Black Girls Code, and Innocence Project.

Direct-to-consumer furniture company Article is matching all employee donations to “organizations addressing racial injustice across North America throughout the month of June,” per an Instagram post.

Rifle Paper Co.

Stationery and lifestyle company Rifle Paper Co. is donating 100 percent of sales of its Martin Luther King, Jr. illustrated quote to the Equal Justice Initiative.

Interior Define

Custom furniture brand Interior Define is investing $50,000 into affected communities in Chicago, the company’s hometown.

Havenly

Digital interior design service Havenly is donating $50,000 to the Equal Justice Initiative, the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, and Campaign Zero, plus matching $25,000 in employee and designer donations to these and other organizations dedicated to antiracism. CEO and founder Lee Mayer has also pledged an additional $5,000 in matching donations.

Jayson Home

This Chicago-based furniture business is donating to My Block, My Hood, My City, a local organization dedicated to under-served youth.

The Consultancy PR

Design-focused PR agency The Consultancy is offering pro-bono communications support to BIPOC-led design businesses.

Bunny Williams Home

Bunny Williams Home has made donations to the NAACP Legal Defense Guild and the Black Artists + Designers Guild, as well as an additional donation to the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, where Williams herself is actively involved and the company donated a portion of proceeds from March through May to account for loss of funds due to cancellation of the annual Kips Bay Designer Showhouse and President's Dinner due to coronavirus.

Roman and Williams Guild

RW Guild is making a donation to the Equal Justice Initiative.

Loloi Rugs

Loloi Rugs is donating a total of $25,000 to the ACLU and Black Lives Matter, as well as working to support scholarships for Black students in fiber or textile programs.

Wayfair

For 30 days, online home giant Wayfair is doubling the company’s match for employee donations to antiracist organizations and doubling its paid time off program for volunteering.

Target

Target is directing $10 million to social justice initiatives, including donations to the National Urban League and the African American Leadership Forum. It’s also forming new partnerships with local organizations in the Twin Cities, where the company is headquartered. Beyond that, Target is offering 10,000 hours of pro-bono consulting services for local Black- and POC-owned businesses with a focus on rebuilding, as well as allowing members of its Target Circle loyalty program to donate its funds to various organizations.

Floyd

Detroit-based furniture company Floyd has donated to Black Lives Matter, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and the George Floyd Memorial Fund, and is looking to not only donate to local causes in the near future, but also continually work with the community.

Textile company Brooklinen has donated to Black Lives Matter, Campaign Zero, and Act Blue Bail Funds as a company, and it is matching employee donations.

Etsy

Etsy has donated $500,000 to the Equal Justice Initiative and $500,000 to Borealis Pihlanthropy’s Black-Led Movement Fund. It’s also matching employee donations.
